Long-term partnership between ICWRGC and ARTS study programme continues

On 27 May 2025, 10 students accompanied by Prof. Ana Meijide from the accredited international postgraduate programme “Agricultural Sciences and Resource Management in the Tropics and Subtropics” (ARTS) at the University of Bonn visited ICWRGC, BfG and the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine (ICPR).

The group was welcomed in the ICPR offices, where introductory lectures on ICWRGC, BfG and ICPR were given. This was followed by a tour of the BfG control room for environmental radioactivity and a water monitoring station featuring innovative online procedures.

After a lunch break at the bank of the Rhine, the group took the bus to the “Mosellum” at Moselle barrage to visit its fish ladder and a water monitoring station with a strong focus on the analysis of cyanobacteria.

Following the visit, Prof. Meijide expressed her thanks and stated that “Many students found that the excursion was the most interesting part of the module.” Hence, it is planned to continue these visits with future cohorts of the ARTS programme.

Impressions from the ARTS visit.

ICWRGC staff members have been active in the ARTS programme since 2022, teaching a series of courses on Hydrology and Water Management on an annual basis. They included the following topics: Hydrology and river basin management, agricultural water management in arid regions, water availability in the soil – from flood generation mechanisms to agricultural droughts, groundwater systems and global change as well as climate change impacts and water related adaptation strategies. The courses are part of the ARTS module “Ecological Conditions, Bioclimatology and Hydrology”. The Water aspect of this module is coordinated by PD Dr Luna Bharati.
