Call for papers on water scarcity issues in transboundary systems

PD Dr. Luna Bharati from ICWRGC is co-editor of a special issue in the International Journal of Water Resources Development titled “From Water Sharing to Water Scarcity: Retreat of Glaciers and Drying of Lakes, Rivers, and Aquifers in Transboundary Systems”. Corresponding editor for contact is Dr. Aziza Baubekova from Oulu University, Finland.

The special issue aims to highlight pressures on transboundary water systems in arid and semi-arid regions. Case studies from the Middle East, Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America are particularly encouraged.

Topics that will be discussed in this special issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Governance of shared aquifers and transboundary rivers under increasing stress
  • Institutional and legal frameworks supporting water diplomacy and cooperative management
  • The impacts of lakes desiccation on regional socio-economic stability and ecological health
  • Application of remote sensing, hydrological modelling, and citizen science in data-scarce regions
  • Nature-based solutions and resilience-building strategies in climate-vulnerable basins
  • Integration of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus to inform cross-sectoral decision-making
  • Participatory approaches, traditional knowledge, and transdisciplinary research for inclusive policy design

Submissions are accepted until December 2025. Further details regarding the submission process can be found in the guidelines here.
