WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) is a BMBF-funded programme headquartered in Ghana and active across 12 West African countries. WASCAL supports climate services, research, and capacity development, with 10 climate change-focused doctoral programmes established at various universities across the WASCAL region (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sénégal and Togo).
In 2024, the International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change (ICWRGC) became the German partner institution for the WASCAL doctoral programme on Climate Change and Water Resources at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin.
The Call for Applications is now open for students from WASCAL member countries to apply for phase 6 of this fully funded PhD programme starting in 2025. The application deadline is January 31, 2025.

Information for Germany-Based Climate Scientists and Hydrologists
Climate scientists and hydrologists based at German research institutions are invited to participate in this programme as co-supervisors. Each PhD student will be jointly supervised by two advisors from WASCAL member countries and one advisor from a German research institution. As part of their doctoral research, students will undertake a fully funded 3- to 6-month research stay at the German supervisor’s institution.
