Impacts of Climate Change on Agriculture and Forestry in the PACA Region – 2016
The Mediterranean climate brings both benefits and drawbacks for agriculture and forestry. However, the adverse effects are increasing in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) and this trend will intensify in future. Therefore, action is required to counterbalance the present impacts of climate change, or even better, to anticipate them. In terms of adjustment strategies, the risk notion is coming to the fore, considering the interaction of direct climate impacts and associated indirect effects. It is also vital to include agricultural and silvicultural methods. The PACA region is characterised by a large variety of territories, which is beneficial, although the overall situation continues to be alarming. It also has advantages over other Mediterranean regions, especially in terms of water resources and water infrastructure. In view of the challenges, research offers interpretation possibilities for empirical observations and allows the development of scenarios to anticipate responses by agricultural and silvicultural systems as well as proposals for innovative, experimental methods.
