Expert network MedECC is awarded den North-South Prize by Council of Europe
Dr. Marianela Fader from ICWRGC is coordinator of the Water Group and member of the network’s Steering Committee on climate and environmental changes in the Mediterranean.
The Council of Europe has awarded the North-South Prize 2020 to the “Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change” (MedECC) network. MedECC supports a transparent and scientific representation of the risks associated with environmental and climate change in the Mediterranean, thus offering a decision-making basis at the political level.
The MedECC network, composed of more than 600 scientists from 35 states from the Mediterranean and Europe, has elaborated the first-ever scientific assessment on climate and environmental change impact in the Mediterranean Basin, published in November 2020. To this end, MedECC had brought together experts from the Northern and Southern Mediterranean, voluntarily drawing up this report. The scientists demonstrated that virtually all subregions of the Mediterranean – both on shore and at sea – are affected by the current anthropogenic climate and environmental changes.
The jury’s explanatory statement claims that MedECC represents a leading and inspiring example of the potential for cooperation between states and societies, to cope with the challenges of climate change and ecological sustainability. Moreover, the jury is convinced that MedECC is an outstanding example of how to implement the vision of the Mediterranean as a shared space of peace, development and human rights.
Since 1995, the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe has been awarded each year to two nominees, standing out by their exceptional commitment to promoting North-South solidarity. Hence, there is invariably one laureate from the North and one from the South. This year, together with MedECC, the “International Commission against the Death Penalty” has received the prize.
